This Betschdorf stoneware crock features a low, wide cylindrical form with an everted rim and two sturdy strap handles. The soft gray salt-glazed surface is decorated with a rhythmic frieze of hand-brushed cobalt scrolls, framed by fine blue lines at the rim and base. Subtle cobalt dabs accent the handles, while an impressed capacity mark “6” appears beneath one handle, denoting six liters. The surface displays the characteristic pebbled “orange-peel” sheen of salt glaze, with light kiln speckling and minor wear consistent with age. A chip on the rim.
Hand-thrown in Betschdorf in Alsace, a village long celebrated for its master potters who adapted Westerwald salt-glazing traditions to local artistry, this vessel perfectly embodies the region’s balance of function and understated beauty. Today, its subtle gray-and-cobalt palette brings quiet elegance to modern interiors. Whether grouped with other salt-glazed wares to highlight variations in decoration and tone, or displayed individually, it offers authentic rustic charm to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
