This hand-blown bubble-glass vase from Biot, Provence, dates to the 1960s and shows a warm, luminous character. Its softly squared ovoid body with rounded shoulders rises to a short cylindrical neck and a gently flared lip. The thick-walled glass in a rich amber tone is enlivened by a field of controlled bubble inclusions that shimmer softly across the surface, lending a lively, textured depth to the glossy finish. Unmarked, as is often the case with workshop production.
Glassmakers in Biot revived the regional tradition of bubble glass in the mid-twentieth century, perfecting a technique of introducing carbonates to the gather to seed regular air inclusions, then encasing the effect within clear glass. This treatment became a hallmark of local craft, uniting rustic warmth with streamlined modern forms suited to the era’s interiors while celebrating the glowing Mediterranean light.
This vase introduces a mellow, sunlit note to a room. It works well on a console or mantel where natural light can illuminate the suspended bubbles, and it makes a striking bud vase for a single branch or a few wildflowers. Pair it with travertine, pale oak, or terracotta, or combine it with other Biot examples in varying heights and tones to create a textural, understated vignette on shelving or a sideboard.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
