A handsome French amber glass apothecary bottle dating to circa 1900. The cylindrical body rises to a short neck and retains its original screen-printed label reading “Encens” (Incense), framed by a simple double-line cartouche. The warm amber glass was chosen to protect light-sensitive contents, while the painted metal cap, finished in burgundy with gilt bands, adds a pleasing note of texture and contrast. Presented in very good condition, with crisp, legible lettering and a beautifully aged cap showing expected paint losses and wear consistent with age and use.
Evocative of the orderly shelves of Belle Époque pharmacies and laboratories, bottles such as this combine utilitarian purpose with understated graphic appeal. Today, they are prized for the warmth of their amber glass, their elegant typography, and the character imparted by decades of use.
Whether displayed on open shelving in a bathroom, arranged in a curiosity cabinet, or grouped with other apothecary vessels on a console or bookcase, this bottle lends an authentic touch of French history and quiet sophistication to an interior.
