An early twentieth-century French glazed earthenware coffee pot, probably from Dieulefit or another pottery center in southern France. Its full baluster body is covered in a fresh green glaze, contrasted by the dark brown-black handle, spout, and lid finial. Particularly appealing are the irregular glaze runs around the spout and handle, where darker tones flow into the green body, emphasizing the spontaneous, handmade character of the piece. Fine overall crazing gives the surface additional depth and softness. The piece shows honest signs of use, including a noticeable chip to the rim of the lid, smaller losses around the base, and minor wear to the spout and finial, all clearly visible but sympathetic to its rustic character.
Its elegant baluster form gives the coffee pot a pleasing sculptural quality, while the contrast between the fresh green glaze and the darker handle and spout gives it real graphic character. The glaze runs and fine crazing animate the surface and emphasize its handmade, spontaneous nature. Displayed on open shelving, a kitchen dresser, or among other ceramics, it brings color, texture, and the relaxed character of French Country pottery.
