This 19th-century traditional Orjol is a type of water jug typically found in the southern regions of France, used to carry water from the village fountain. The jug features a rounded, bulbous body with a narrow neck and two intricately twisted handles on either side, which provide both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The twisted handles and warm tone of the glaze are typical of the Lauragais region pottery tradition. The Lauragais region, located in the southwest of France, has a rich tradition of pottery that dates back centuries. Known for its fertile lands and proximity to natural clay deposits, Lauragais became a hub for rural pottery production, with artisans crafting functional yet beautifully designed pieces for everyday use in households and farms.

Pottery from the Lauragais region is often characterized by its robustness, created to serve practical purposes such as storing and carrying water, oil, or grain. However, the pottery was not purely utilitarian. Craftsmen from the region also paid close attention to form and decoration, with many pieces featuring decorative glazes and stylistic elements, often inspired by the rural surroundings and natural tones of the landscape. The region’s potters typically used earthy glazes in warm, natural hues such as ochre, brown, and green, reflecting the agricultural roots and the colors of the surrounding countryside, as seen on this piece. With its charming, timeworn appearance, this Orjol makes a perfect decorative piece for a rustic or country-style home, whether used as a vase or as a standalone piece.
