This early 20th century Sicilian terracotta pastry mold is hand formed with a softly irregular, rounded shape and carved with a floral motif designed to appear in raised relief when the confection was unmolded. The interior is fully glazed in a warm honey-to-straw yellow, the glaze settling gently into the carved petals and contours, while the exterior shows a more uneven, rustic application that reveals the earthy character of the clay beneath. Subtle firing marks, glaze variations, and small imperfections speak to its handmade origin and traditional village production.
Used historically to shape fruit pastes and marzipan-like sweets for festive tables and religious celebrations, molds such as this were essential tools in Sicilian confectionery. The form rests on simple integrated feet, allowing it to sit level when filled and left to dry, ensuring an even, well-defined result. Intimate in scale and quietly expressive, it carries both culinary history and decorative charm, equally evocative displayed on a kitchen shelf or repurposed today as a small serving dish or decorative accent.
