This slender and elegant floor-standing pricket candlestand from the late 18th century is hand-forged in iron with a gabled triangular head fitted with multiple taper spikes and an apex pricket for a total of nine candles. The triangular rack rises above a simple straight stem set on three splayed feet, each pierced for fixing to the floor. The iron retains an old blackened finish with areas of russet oxidation, and it shows a weathered, rustic patina that enhances its Gothic character. A few prickets display slight irregular bends, yet the piece remains sturdy and stable.
Such pricket stands were standard furnishings in parish churches and roadside chapels, used to hold votive candles offered in prayer. Known in France as a pic-cierge or porte-cierge, the form was typically produced by village ferronniers using traditional techniques, the subtly uneven profiles and tool marks a testament to artisanal savoir-faire.
In a contemporary interior it reads as a sculptural accent as much as as an ambient lighting element. Place it beside a fireplace, in an entry, or along a console to bring verticality and a note of rustic ceremonial character. Use with beeswax tapers to create a warm, traditional glow.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
