A large French oval hat box dating to the late 19th century, crafted from pasteboard and covered in stone-grey printed paper with trompe-l'œil panel decoration. The design features floral cartouches, fruit-filled still lifes, and charming hunting scenes with a dog, all framed by neoclassical borders. The original cord closure remains intact. Inside the lid is the stamp of a papetier (stationer), Frédéric Rogeon of Clermont-Ferrand, in the Auvergne region of central France, adding a sense of provenance and personal history. Condition is consistent with age, with frayed edges, scuffs, light spotting, small paper losses, and minor separations around the lid rim, all contributing to its period charm and nostalgic appeal.
With its evocative, timeworn appeal, this hat box brings instant character to a bedroom, dressing room, or mudroom. The softly weathered surface and restrained monochrome palette pair beautifully with painted furniture, antique linens, and other period accessories. Whether displayed atop an armoire, stacked with other decorative boxes, or used to store scarves, letters, and keepsakes, it offers both practical storage and an authentic touch of French country style.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
