A generously scaled Savoyard pouring mug in glazed earthenware, late 19th to early 20th century, France. The cylindrical body subtly waists to a low foot and carries a rounded strap handle with a pinched spout. A pale straw yellow lead glaze coats the red earthenware, with a hand painted band near the base of rust zigzags, manganese dotted rosettes, and green foliate strokes executed in barbotine.
Such pitchers often served as small pitchers for milk or cider, their honest finish and straightforward savoir-faire distinguishing them from refined faïence made in urban centers.
In a contemporary setting, it brings rustic character to open kitchen shelving, a farmhouse table, or a console vignette, pairing well with copper, stoneware, and woven baskets. Use as a small vessel for seasonal cuttings or a countertop utensil pot with a glass liner if water is desired, or group it with other terre vernissée for an authentic Alpine tableau. Decorative use is recommended.
