A Provençal green-glazed earthenware water jug, known as a gargoulette, from southern France, late 19th to early 20th century. The compact ovoid body rises to a collared rim and is topped by a sturdy arched strap handle bridging the mouth. A small loop handle at one shoulder balances a pronounced pouring spout at the other, all set on a shallow ring foot. Unlike most examples of this type, which were only half glazed, this jug is fully glazed in a variegated, speckled green (moucheté), giving the surface depth and liveliness. This traditional form of glazed earthenware reflects the practical savoir-faire of rural Provence.
Carried to the fields or set at table, gargoulettes were used for water or light wine. The copper-based green glaze was typical of village workshops across Provence and Languedoc, offering a durable yet decorative finish that brought color and rustic charm to Mediterranean households. Today this jug lends an authentic note of southern French character to interiors. Displayed on open kitchen shelves or a farmhouse table, it pairs beautifully with confit pots and other rustic earthenware, bringing warmth and authentic Provençal character to the setting. Styled as a sculptural accent on a console or filled with dried herbs or olive branches, it adds a relaxed, timeless presence that bridges rustic and contemporary settings alike.
