This early 20th-century Savoyard serving platter in glazed earthenware combines bold geometry with folk-inspired decoration. The wide circular form rests on a flat base with a slightly raised ring that gives definition to the underside, while the sides angle outward to a gently everted rim. Its surface is richly finished with a deep brown ground enlivened by concentric yellow spirals at the center and rim, interspersed with stylized floral sprays in yellow and green slip. The back is fitted with a wire for hanging, a traditional way to display such platters as decorative accents in the kitchen or dining room. The glaze has a soft satin sheen with minor surface wear and small irregularities consistent with artisanal production and age.
Produced in the Savoy region of France, platters of this type were valued both as functional tableware and as ornament. Their vivid motifs reflect the vernacular tradition of slip-decorated pottery, where potters used contrasting clays and glazes to create patterns that were striking even from across the room. In rural households, such pieces were used for serving fruit, tarts, or cheeses, but when not in service they often brightened a dresser or wall, part of the visual rhythm of a working kitchen.
Today, this platter’s graphic design and earthy palette make it a versatile decorative element. It can be hung singly as a statement piece or grouped with other rustic pottery to form a collected display. Equally, it may be used on a console or dining table as a shallow centerpiece or fruit platter, where its spirals and floral sprays lend energy and color to both rustic and contemporary interiors.
