This late nineteenth century terracotta mold from Soufflenheim in Alsace was used to bake the traditional Easter lamb cake known locally as Oschterlammele. Formed in two interlocking parts, it opens to reveal a finely modelled lamb in relief, its fleece and contours carefully rendered within a glossy warm brown glaze. The exterior remains unglazed, bearing a soft, chalky patina with traces of use that speak to its domestic history. A simple metal clasp once held the two sections securely together during baking, though the two parts no longer align tightly enough for practical use. Such molds were central to seasonal celebrations, producing symbolic cakes that were dusted with sugar and placed at the heart of the Easter table.
Today, this piece is appreciated as a decorative object and a conversation starter connected to enduring Easter traditions. Displayed closed, it reads as a rustic ceramic object with a distinctive silhouette; opened, it reveals its detailed interior and invites conversation about its traditional purpose. It may be placed on open kitchen shelving, in a collection of antique culinary wares, or used as a decorative accent during spring gatherings. Whether appreciated for its craftsmanship or its connection to enduring seasonal rituals, it brings warmth, history, and a sense of continuity to the home.
