This lovely Savoyard earthenware pitcher has a straight-sided cylindrical form with a pinched spout and a tight loop handle. The exterior shows a warm ochre to terracotta ground enlivened by slip-trailing in green and black, punctuated with small cream dots arranged as zigzags and vertical dashes, while the interior carries a soft honey-yellow glaze. Early 20th century, Savoie, France.
Rooted in the regional tradition of terre vernissée, this type of pitcher was made in village workshops across Savoie for everyday service at the table and hearth. Slip-trailed motifs in copper green and manganese black over an ochre ground were favored from the late 19th into the early 20th century, reflecting a rustic Alpine aesthetic and practical savoir-faire. The straightforward cylindrical body and sturdy handle speak to utility, while the lively, raised decoration adds the quietly graphic character typical of Savoyard pottery.
In a contemporary setting it offers a rustic note of color and texture. Display it on open kitchen shelving with other French terre vernissée and faïence, or place it on a dining console as a simple bud vase for wildflowers. It also works on a desk or dresser holding utensils or brushes, bringing a modest, authentic Alpine accent to traditional, country, or pared-back modern rooms.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
