Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, this style of confit pot was produced in Martres-Tolosane, in southwestern France. It features a graceful ovoid body with high-set loop handles and a gently domed lid topped by a flat button finial. The luminous ivory glaze lends a soft, understated elegance, while the lid displays a slightly warmer tone, a subtle variation resulting from its separate firing. Unlike the more familiar confit pots that were partially buried in cool cellars, these lidded examples were intended to be kept on display in the kitchen for storing everyday provisions. Minor firing imperfections, glaze speckling, and a few small chips to the rim and handles contribute to its authentic character.
This charming white example retains its original lid, a feature that has become increasingly difficult to find intact.
Beautiful displayed as a focal point on a shelf or dresser, it also works wonderfully as a vase or as practical kitchen storage. Its timeless silhouette and serene glaze bring a sense of authenticity and quiet elegance to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
