This Christofle silver-plated asparagus service from 1930s France comprises a sculptural set of lidded tongs and a raised draining cradle. The tongs, with their broad, ribbed blades, are designed to gently grip delicate spears, their stepped, fluted form catching the light with a crisp Art Deco rhythm. The cradle is elegantly elevated on four slender supports, with a gently curved, pierced platform that allows excess water to drain while keeping the asparagus neatly presented. The clean lines and balanced proportions offer a simple, elegant design that is both practical and refined.
Commissioned for shipboard dining by Messageries Maritimes, the major French shipping company founded in 1851 and active throughout the 20th century, this service reflects the refinement of interwar ocean liner hospitality. The engraved anchor, horse head, and crown on the pieces directly evoke the company’s maritime identity and prestige. Christofle, established in the 19th century and renowned for its high-quality silver plate, supplied tableware for leading hotels and passenger fleets.
