This charming petite Art Nouveau salad bowl was crafted in glazed earthenware, likely in France around 1900. Although essentially round, the vessel appears square when viewed from above because the rim is deeply scalloped, its profile cleverly treated to create an illusion. The rim is edged in warm umber with a cobalt inner border punctuated by dots. Molded bouquets unfurl across a beige ground, combining a sinuous ribbon bow with leaves, berries, and daisies picked out in deep blue and aqua green, the relief lightly brushed to accent high points. A stylized daisy is modeled under the base underscoring the care and quality brought in the making of this piece, but there is no other mark or signature. Age-appropriate glaze crazing and minor wear add to its authentic character.
French barbotine of this period, often termed “majolica” in English, celebrates nature with tactile relief, fluid lines, and a painterly palette associated with the Art Nouveau movement. The whiplash curves of the ribbon and the lively foliate sprigs speak to the era’s fascination with organic forms.
Display it as a delicate centerpiece on a dining table filled with seasonal fruit, or let it make a quiet statement on open shelving, nestled within a curated collection. In an entryway, it serves as an elegant vide-poche, its palette harmonizing with linen, wicker, and patinated brass.
