A large late 19th century earthenware confit pot, this vessel has a generous wide mouth, graceful twin loop handles, and an uncommon glaze in soft butter yellow that settles into an unglazed lower body and ring foot. The surface shows a beautiful crackled patina with scattered glaze losses and small nicks at the rim and handles, presenting a timeworn, rustic condition consistent with age and use. Made in southern France, such pots were traditionally used to store preserved meats in cool cellars, their interior glaze helping to keep contents sealed and safe.
Its scale and warm color make a striking focal point on a console, farm table, or kitchen island. Style it with branches, olive cuttings, or dried grasses, or use it as a cachepot with a liner for herbs. The wide mouth lends presence and ease of arrangement, while the mellow crackle and earthy clay bring relaxed authenticity and quiet character to both contemporary and traditional rooms.
