This slender bedside cabinet dates to around 1900 and features a simple, well-proportioned silhouette with a molded cornice and plinth base. It is painted in a deep black finish with softly worn edges that reveal gentle age and use. The drawer fronts are framed with understated paneling and fitted with brass shell bin pulls. The façade presents seven drawer fronts; the two central “false drawers” open together as a single door, revealing an interior compartment originally intended to house a chamber pot, a charming reminder of bedroom rituals before modern plumbing. The green faux-marble top is a later replacement, but it harmonizes beautifully with the dark paint, adding contrast and a subtle decorative lift to the piece. The interior compartment is lined in marble for ease of cleaning and hygiene, and it is fitted with a recent, utilitarian click-style latch that secures the door firmly; while not period-appropriate in appearance, it functions well but could easily be replaced with a more sympathetic historical mechanism if desired.
Its narrow footprint and vertical proportions make this piece especially versatile. At the bedside, it works beautifully as a night table, with a lamp and book on top and essentials tucked discreetly into the drawers. In an entry or dressing area, it serves beautifully as a compact accessory cabinet, while in a study it is ideal for filing papers or tucking away stationery, adding character without taking up visual space.
