This charming ceramic wall-mounted cutlery drainer from Savoy, dated 1885, features a circular backplate pierced for hanging and supporting twin cups perforated at the base for drainage. The warm straw-yellow glaze is enlivened with a naïve hand-painted folk decoration depicting a simple farmhouse set within a garden landscape, rendered in an unusual blue color, echoed in the blue accents outlining the cup rims. The cups themselves are further decorated with folksy green motifs, possibly stylized fir trees and wreaths, punctuated with russet dot accents, imbuing the piece with an alpine spirit and seasonal symbolism.
The decoration is uncommon for the region, particularly the use of blue, which was employed sparingly in village workshops and typically reserved for minimal accenting rather than narrative scenes. The piece remains in good, pleasingly timeworn condition, with small glaze flakes at the rims, slight pitting, and light surface wear consistent with age, all of which enhance its authenticity and charm. Hang it above a sink for flatware or wooden spoons, in a studio as a small caddy for brushes, or repurpose it to hold dried herbs or flowers. Its gentle colors and folk charm add a warm, understated rustic touch.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
