A striking and unusual “sorcerer’s” cane dating to around 1900, crafted from richly figured amourette wood, also known as snakewood for its distinctive mottled grain. The shaft is elegantly twisted, enhancing the natural decorative quality of the wood.
The piece is carved from a single piece, the handle formed as a rooster claw grasping a nut, a symbolic and somewhat mysterious motif often associated with so-called “fantasy” or “curiosity” canes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This type of cane was prized more for its expressive and sculptural qualities than for purely functional use.
The piece shows a crack running along the shaft, consistent with age and the natural movement of the wood. This does not detract from its strong visual presence and character.
A highly unusual and collectible object, perfect for a cane collection or as a conversation piece in a cabinet of curiosities, embodying the imaginative spirit of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
