Circa 1940 tabletop globe with a sphere formed from printed paper map segments in soft sea greens and warm ochres. The cartography was compiled by J. Forest, geographer, and published by Girard Barrère of Paris. The globe is mounted on a stepped chromed brass base with an inclined axis and thumb screw, a streamlined design characteristic of the late 1930s and early 1940s. The surface shows a few small dings and scratches, along with minor age wear to the chrome, all consistent with use. French cartographic publishing of this period supplied schools and offices across Europe, and Forest’s work is particularly admired for its clear typography and elegant tonal shading.
Place it on a writing desk, library console, or bookshelf where its gentle colors and reflective base add quiet presence and a sense of discovery. It pairs beautifully with leather-bound volumes, a banker’s lamp, or minimalist metal accents, bridging traditional and contemporary schemes. As a study companion or a conversation piece in a home office, it brings warmth, curiosity, and an understated scholarly note to the room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
