A 19th century French wall barometer with integrated thermometer, housed in an elegant hexagonal glazed case surmounted by a shaped crest. The central aneroid barometer dial, printed in French with weather indications and fitted with a blued steel pointer, sits against a soft sky blue ground. It is framed by a finely molded gilt border with foliate ornament, while the outer frame is finished with a textured silvered metal sheet that creates a subtle hammered effect and catches the light around the glass. The case is mounted on an ebonized wooden backboard with a small pendant element at the base, and the thermometer is set above in a narrow glazed column. The palette of pale blue, gold, silver, and black gives the piece a refined yet decorative presence.
The barometer retains its original mechanism but no longer contains mercury and is therefore not functional. It remains in good antique condition with attractively timeworn surfaces, gentle wear to the gilding, light speckling to the dial, and minor scuffs to the ebonized wood. Today it offers a strong decorative presence on the wall and also serves as an intriguing historical curiosity for collectors interested in early meteorological instruments.
This barometer brings a cultured note to an entry, library, or sitting room. Hang it above a console with a small stack of books and a bronze, or weave it into a salon wall of portraits and landscapes. Its gentle color and restrained gilding pair beautifully with patinated frames, painted boiserie, or a coastal palette where the maritime association feels at home.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
