An adorable glazed stoneware lidded box modeled as a stylized lamb by contemporary French ceramic artist Julie Desert Armanville, the underside stamped JDA. The rounded body separates at the midline to form lid and base, standing sturdily on four short legs. The lamb’s head tilts gently to one side, ears pricked with alert charm, while the surface is richly textured with hand-pressed spiral curls evoking fleece beneath a deep chocolate glaze. Areas of soft variegation enliven the surface, and the rims and hooves reveal the warm buff clay beneath. The result is a delightful storybook silhouette that balances naïve whimsy with quiet refinement.
Julie Desert Armanville lives and works in southern France, where she creates hand-built stoneware that often takes inspiration from animals and natural forms. Her practice celebrates the individuality of each piece, embracing the irregularities of clay and glaze as expressive qualities rather than flaws. She played a significant role at the Roger Capron design studio in Vallauris between 1972 and 1982, and is recognized for her poetic approach to form, texture, and finish, producing vessels and sculptural objects that bring together folk art charm with contemporary studio sensibility.
This enchanting lamb box makes a warm and whimsical accent on a console, mantel, or bookshelf, and the lidded interior is perfect for holding jewelry, matches, or cherished tokens. Its playful character also makes it a delightful treasure box for a child’s room, ideal for hiding small keepsakes or trinkets.
