This footed coupe with rolled volute handles is hand-thrown terracotta with a rich green glaze accented in deep brown, dating to the early to mid twentieth century in France. The wide shallow bowl rises from a low foot and is flanked by two tightly scrolled handles. The glaze pools beautifully in the well with natural tonal variation, and while unmarked, the combination of green with darker brown accents is characteristic of Dieulefit ceramics.
The form recalls ancient Greek kylix and krater vessels, reinterpreted through Provençal glazed pottery. Dieulefit, in the Drôme, has been known since the eighteenth century for its refined clay and distinctive glazes, and in the twentieth century it became a hub for studio potters.
This coupe combines elegance in its raised foot with the robust character of regional craftsmanship. Its verdant tone brings a fresh accent to interiors. It works beautifully as a centerpiece on a farmhouse table filled with fruit, as a sculptural catchall on a console, or on open shelves layered with pottery and wood. The classical silhouette suits rustic, Mediterranean, and contemporary spaces, where the gentle sheen of the glaze adds quiet depth.
