An early 19th-century hand-colored copperplate engraving titled L’Ancienne Église à Middelbourg, depicting the old church in Middelburg, Zeeland. The composition is based on a drawing by C. Pronk, drawn from life, and was engraved and colored by F. Leizelt. The title appears in reverse lettering, characteristic of optical view prints designed for viewing through a perspective viewer. This sheet forms part of the Collection des Perspectives, a series published in Augsburg by Joseph Carmine in the late 18th or early 19th century. Printed on paper and enhanced with hand coloring, the scene combines crisp architectural detail with soft greens, bright red and slate roofs, animated by small figures in the square. It is presented in a giltwood frame with a gently time-softened finish. The paper shows light toning and scattered foxing consistent with age.
An optical view, also known as a perspective view, is a type of print produced in the 18th and early 19th centuries to be seen through a viewing device fitted with a lens and mirror. The compositions emphasize strong linear perspective and were often enhanced with hand coloring to heighten the illusion of depth. Titles were frequently printed in reverse so they would read correctly when reflected inside the viewer. These prints commonly depict European cityscapes and landmarks and were popular with travelers and collectors for their engaging, almost three-dimensional effect.
Beyond its historical interest, this engraving brings quiet architectural structure and gentle color to an interior. Its balanced composition and refined detail make it ideal above a console, within a study, or layered into a gallery wall of complementary prints. The softened palette and aged gilding lend warmth and authenticity, enriching both classical and contemporary spaces with a sense of travel, history, and cultivated taste.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
