This antique pharmacy mortar, dating from the early 20th century, was produced by the renowned Bayeux manufactory, one of France's leading ceramic producers throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, closed in 1952. Crafted in white ceramic, it features a generous pouring spout and is accompanied by its original composite pestle, combining a turned wood handle with a ceramic grinding head.
Designed for everyday use in an apothecary, the pestle's ceramic head is removable and interchangeable, a practical feature that allowed it to be replaced if damaged without the need for an entirely new pestle. The mortar remains in very good antique condition, with a few small rim chips, minor fritting, and light interior staining from years of use. The original beechwood handle has developed a beautiful patina and natural age-related cracks.
Whether used to grind herbs and spices or displayed on open shelving, this mortar and pestle lend an authentic, collected feel to a kitchen, bringing the timeless charm of antique apothecary wares to any interior.
