This Betschdorf Alsatian stoneware crock features a softly tapered cylindrical body with an everted rim and twin strap handles, all coated in a pale gray salt glaze and hand-decorated in deep cobalt blue. A bold diagonal brushstroke band accents the shoulder, while a freehand foliate flourish adds a spontaneous decorative touch to the front. The surface shows the characteristic pebbled sheen and light kiln speckling typical of salt-glazed ware. Made in the early 20th century in Betschdorf, Alsace, it remains in good condition with small glaze nicks, light staining, and minor surface wear adding to its antique charm.
Rooted in the Westerwald tradition brought across the Rhine, Betschdorf pottery reflects a seamless blend of regional heritage and enduring craftsmanship. Functional yet expressive, vessels like this were used for storing butter, pickles, sauerkraut, or apothecary goods. Today, such pieces bring authentic rural warmth to a home, whether grouped with other gray-and-cobalt pots for a collected display or showcased individually as a decorative accent in a country kitchen or dining space.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
