This cast iron piggy bank, from the early to mid- 20th century, has a weighty, sculptural presence and likely once served a decorative role in a French charcuterie shop. The form is modeled with full jowls, folded skin, and a softly arched back with a coin slot, while the surface is painted in a buff tone with black hooves and a faint blush at the snout and ears. Most striking are its round glass eyes, beautifully set and full of life, animating the figure with an endearing, realistic expression. The two-part body is fitted with a slotted side screw, originally designed to be unscrewed in order to collect the coins inside. We have not attempted to open it and cannot guarantee that it will function or re-secure once unscrewed. Scattered scuffs and paint losses and a mellow patina from handling add to its vintage character.
With its solid weight, gentle wear, and lively gaze, this pig carries the friendly presence of a household companion. It makes a delightful decorative accent, whether perched on a kitchen shelf, brightening a dining room, or adding whimsy to a children’s room, its lifelike glass eyes inviting a smile.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
