This petite child’s bentwood chair by Fischel features a graceful double-loop back in steam-bent beech with a warm walnut stain and a round hand-caned seat in the classic hexagonal pattern. The legs are slender and slightly splayed, giving the piece an airy silhouette. Dating from the early 20th century, it presents in good, timeworn condition with well-executed minor restorations to the legs and a crack in the seat ring that does not affect structure or stability. Light surface wear is consistent with age and use. Bentwood seating emerged in the mid 19th century with Michael Thonet’s innovations and quickly shaped the look of European cafés and homes.
Fischel, founded by David Gabriel Fischel, became one of the foremost producers in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, celebrated for refined curves, resilient caning, and practical elegance. Child-size versions like this echoed the popular café chair forms at a smaller scale, offering a sturdy yet lightweight seat suited to nurseries and family rooms. Today it brings sculptural warmth and a note of continental charm to interiors. Style it in a nursery or playroom for a child's enjoyment, or place it as an accent in an entry or bath to hold a small stack of towels or a favorite toy. Its compact profile and mellow patina pair effortlessly with country house, Gustavian, or modern minimalist settings.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
