A beautiful Art Nouveau silverplate gigot service dating to the early 20th century, this elegant two-piece set reflects the movement’s love of flowing line and naturalistic ornament. The knife features a broad, gently curved blade engraved with sinuous floral motifs, while the handle is richly decorated in relief with blossoms and scrolling stems that extend gracefully along its length. The silverplate has developed a soft, mellow patina that enhances the depth of the decoration and highlights the fine detailing. Hallmarks are present, and the knife handle shows a visible age-related crack along one side. Accompanying the knife is the original gigot handle clamp, an adjustable holding device designed to secure a leg of lamb firmly in place while carving. The clamp fastens into the shank bone using its screw mechanism and key, allowing the carver to steady the roast without direct contact. Its sculptural, petal-like collar and matching floral handle echo the design of the knife, creating a harmonious and highly decorative ensemble.
Originally intended for formal tableside service, this refined set would have combined practicality with visual elegance. Today it serves beautifully as a decorative object, particularly in a dining room or kitchen setting, though the clamp mechanism remains functional and can still be used if desired. It makes a striking addition to a dining room display, a collection of Art Nouveau silver, or a well-appointed kitchen with a taste for historic elegance.
