Discovered in the former movie theater in Althen-des-Paluds, Provence, this antique wooden cinema bench comprises four folding seats and an end tip-up seat, preserving the atmosphere of an early French picture house. Dating from the 1920s or 1930s, its design beautifully bridges two decorative eras: the gently curving backs and armrests retain the flowing lines of Art Nouveau, while the geometric pierced seat backs and restrained silhouette anticipate the emerging Art Deco aesthetic. The simple, almost rustic construction of the legs lends the piece an overall honest, utilitarian character.
Crafted from solid wood and plywood, the bench has acquired a rich, warm patina through decades of use. The original seat numbers remain faintly visible on the backrests, a tangible reminder of its past life welcoming generations of moviegoers. The folding mechanism remains largely functional: three seats still return automatically on their original springs, while one remains in the lowered position. Its seat panel appears to have been replaced during the bench's working life, lacking the pierced geometric decoration found on the others. Wear, scuffs, and small marks throughout are consistent with its age and long service, enhancing its authentic character.
Whether placed in a hallway, library, game room, or commercial interior, this unusual bench becomes an instant conversation piece. It combines sculptural presence with authentic history and offers a distinctive alternative to conventional seating, lending warmth, character, and a collected feel to any space.
