An early 20th-century French winegrower’s tilt-top table, crafted in solid oak and retaining a rich, honey-toned patina. The oval top is formed from wide joined planks, its surface gently burnished through years of honest use. Subtle tonal variations, small knots, and minor age marks give the wood warmth and depth. The oval top tilts to a vertical position for storage, and when lowered for use, the pivoting central support swings into place beneath it to brace and stabilize the top. The table rests on a trestle base with straight uprights and softly curved feet, joined by a low stretcher and centered by a pierced pivot support that forms part of the tilting mechanism while lending a subtle decorative presence. Such foldaway tables were traditionally used for the tasting of the year’s vintage in the winegrower’s cellar, and fitted with a tilt-top so it could be easily stored away after use.
Solid and well-balanced, the table presents in good condition, with a timeworn finish and light surface irregularities consistent with age and rural use. This piece brings an easy, authentic character to an interior, equally at home as a breakfast table in a kitchen, a small center table in an entry, or an occasional table in a sitting room. Folded, it stands gracefully against a wall, where the sculptural base and circular top become a quiet focal point, ideal for a narrow hall or wine room. Dressed with a simple lamp, a bowl of seasonal fruit, or a cluster of stoneware, it lends warmth and a relaxed, timeless atmosphere without crowding the space.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
