Likely from Cliousclat in the Drôme, early 20th century, this generous yet lightweight earthenware serving platter presents a warm straw-yellow lead glaze with a wide well and slightly everted rim. A central medallion is painted with a simple but refined floral motif: four scrolling green leaves punctuated by small iron-red flowerheads. The glaze shows fine speckling and a soft satin sheen, with scattered rim frits and pinpoint glaze losses adding to its rustic charm.
Cliousclat, a historic pottery village in the Drôme, has been renowned for its glazed earthenware, since the Middle Ages. Using local clay, potters produced everyday wares sealed with copper- and iron-based lead glazes in warm yellows, greens, and browns. Decoration was bold yet simple, designed to read clearly from a distance on kitchen dressers. This tradition, sustained through the 20th century at the village’s central workshop, reflects the marriage of utility and rustic charm that defines Cliousclat pottery.
The soft yellow ground and green foliate painting make an inviting accent in a farmhouse kitchen or dining room. Hang it in a wall arrangement with other pieces, set it upright on a dresser or open shelving, or place it on a console as a shallow centerpiece layered with linen, bringing an easy Provençal note to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
