A low rustic slab bench in solid hardwood, hand-hewn from a single live-edge plank and raised on three splayed log legs staked directly into the seat. The surface retains an undulating profile with adze marks, knots, checks, and softened edges, all enriched by a pale, sun-bleached gray patina. Dating from the early to mid-20th century and likely of French countryside origin, it remains in weathered condition with age-opened fissures, worn edges, and an ingrained surface that heighten its authenticity and rustic character.
Closely aligned with the tradition of farm benches, this piece reflects rural savoir-faire that favored sturdy local woods and straightforward staked construction. Its organic silhouette and unembellished honesty embody a timeless vernacular spirit, functional yet sculptural, while resonating with both farmhouse traditions and the wabi-sabi ideals of later design movements.
Versatile in use, the bench can serve as a sculptural coffee table, a casual entry seat, or a stand for potted plants in a kitchen, loft, or terrace. It pairs beautifully with terracotta, wrought iron, and linen, while its tactile patina brings quiet warmth and understated presence to rustic and contemporary interiors alike.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
