This petite stand is a painted cast-iron figural piece, likely French and dating to the 1960s. Modeled as a standing frog with large glass eyes and a wide downward-curved mouth, it has a comical yet endearing expression, as if earnestly presenting the shallow lily pad tray it holds before its chest. The frog is finished in mottled pond green with raised circular spots and stands on a rockwork plinth. The tray shows russet oxidation, and the paint has scattered losses and small edge chips that together create an attractive timeworn patina.
Designed as a small stand or catchall, it would have been used for calling cards, matches, soap, or even a pinch of birdseed placed by a threshold or terrace. Charming in scale, it works beautifully on an entry console as a catchall, on a bathroom vanity for soap, or outdoors on a plinth tucked among terracotta pots, where it can also serve as a tiny bird feeder.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
