This remarkable 19th-century marriage tray was carved in the Savoy region and bears an inscription on the underside with the initials of the bride and groom, along with the date: 25 April 1891. Hewn from a single piece of wood, it exemplifies the alpine tradition of offering finely carved wooden objects as wedding gifts, rich in regional symbolism and craftsmanship. The entire surface is intricately worked in deep relief, featuring a profusion of carved motifs including two flaming hearts, birds, flowers, foliage, a teapot, a sugar pot, and baskets - each element chosen for its symbolic resonance.
The flaming hearts represent fidelity and union, while the birds and blooming branches evoke harmony, domestic life, and fertility. The presence of kitchen vessels reflects the centrality of the home in married life. The tray's handles are formed as carved arches, a subtle regional reference to the tunnels that cut through mountain roads in Savoy. The border is trimmed with a delicate notched edge, framing the smooth interior surface. Note some losses (particularly to one corner), with the original patina preserved and the carving still sharp. This is an outstanding example of alpine folk art and matrimonial tradition, notable for both its technical refinement and its intimate historical context.
