A richly carved two-part Henri II Revival display cabinet dating from the late 19th century. Retaining its original antique glass panes, whose subtle waviness beautifully catches the light, the cabinet combines generous display space above with practical enclosed storage below. The supplied key operates both the glazed upper section and the lower cupboard. The drawer locks are present but their original key has been lost. Minor marks, shrinkage, and age-related wear contribute to the cabinet's authentic character. It is possible that the cabinet was originally constructed with an intermediate shelf or supporting columns between the two sections, however the current arrangement is both aesthetically pleasing and entirely functional.
The decoration is particularly noteworthy. Carved vine leaves, grape clusters, scrolling foliage, and birds animate the façade, celebrating themes of abundance and prosperity drawn from Renaissance ornament. The craftsmanship extends to the smallest details, including the superb drawer pulls carved as twisting branches or vine tendrils, while medallioned panels feature birds framed within wreath-like compositions. The interior is lined with decorative paper in a traditional Provençal pattern of yellow and red, providing a cheerful contrast to the richly carved oak exterior.
There is a delightful exuberance to the design, almost bordering on the theatrical, yet the cabinet possesses a warmth and confidence that make it a piece of genuine character. It brings a strong decorative presence to both traditional and eclectic interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
