This false pair of Provençal ladder-back side chairs, dating to the late 17th century, is crafted in solid walnut and reflects the rustic refinement of regional craftsmanship. While almost identical in form, they differ slightly in size, introducing a subtle asymmetry that adds charm and character to a setting. Each chair is defined by three scalloped, shaped back slats carved with foliate accents, framed by gently tapering stiles capped with small turned finials. The bases rest on sculptural sheep bone-form legs joined by undulating stretchers, a hallmark of the period.
The seats have been reupholstered in sturdy botanical tapestry fabric in shades of moss, olive, and slate, secured with nail head trim that contrasts nicely with the mellow walnut frames. Time has softened the edges and enriched the patina, leaving surface wear consistent with centuries of use, while the fresh upholstery ensures strength and durability for practical seating today.
Today, these chairs bring depth and character to interiors that value authentic historic detail. They can flank a console in an entryway, anchor a fireplace arrangement, or serve as occasional dining chairs around a farmhouse table. They may also be used playfully as “his and hers” nightstand chairs on either side of a bed, adding both function and personality. Their sculptural walnut frames and timeworn surfaces enrich a space with texture, while the subtle asymmetry introduces a note of informality and charm that feels both genuine and timeless.
