This mid-20th-century carved wooden goose, likely French from the 1950s, has a wonderfully sculptural presence with its long, downturned neck, tapering beak, and lightly incised wing feathers. The body is hand carved in a streamlined, almost graphic silhouette and finished in a dark grey paint now handsomely thinned by age and weathering. It is currently mounted on a later, assembled turned-and-fluted wooden stand with a simple square plinth, which elevates it from utilitarian field gear into the realm of art.
Echoing the tradition of French waterfowl decoys, its simplified form and honest materials preserve the practical savoir-faire of working carvings while offering strong decorative appeal.
This piece sits easily on a library console or living room sideboard, its long, graceful profile adding quiet movement and acting as a natural focal point. It pairs well with weathered oak, linen, and patinated metal, and is naturally at home in coastal, farmhouse, or lodge settings, while also bringing a relaxed, collected touch to more contemporary rooms. Group it with other folk carvings or vintage prints for a layered, characterful display.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
