An antique tabletop roulette wheel, likely French and dating to the early 20th century, crafted in a turned wood dish with molded rim and a spun nickel-plated brass turret capped by a knopped finial, presents an elegant profile. The rotating number ring displays alternating hand-painted red and black fields with white numerals, the paint retaining its freshness and contrast, while an outer circle of small brass pins forms the ball pockets. Two balls accompany the piece, one lead and one wood. A timeworn silvered surface to the metal, light surface marks and small nicks to the wood add vintage charm.
Developed in France during the 18th century, roulette quickly became a staple of European gaming culture and a highlight of casinos from Monte Carlo to Paris. By the Belle Époque, compact wheels such as this were also made for private salons and cafés Displayed on a bar, library table, or game room console, it brings an authentic note of clubroom character and conversation. Pair it with brass barware and leather-bound books for a classic vignette, or set it on a sideboard as a sculptural centerpiece.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
