A medium scale rectangular French shop sign circa 1950, hand painted on galvanized sheet steel and set within an iron strap frame, reading TABACS above RECETTE BURALISTE. The block capitals show shadowed lettering, with TABACS in grey and white accented by mustard yellow, and the lower text in soft green. The surface carries an attractive patina with scattered oxidation, paint losses, and abrasions consistent with outdoor use; three perimeter screws are missing.
In France the sale of tobacco was a state monopoly, and licensed dealers known as "buralistes" served as local points for regulated goods and fiscal stamps. The wording recette buraliste indicates a shop authorized to handle state revenue items and duties, a familiar sight in towns and villages. The galvanized tin and hand lettered typography with drop shadows reflect provincial sign painting savoir-faire of the period, when practical materials and bold legibility were prized.
This piece brings the nostalgic poetry of the old French storefront into the home, its weathered evoking decades of sun, rain, and passing trade. It lends instant character and graphic strength to a kitchen, bar, game room, or study, where its greyed metal tones harmonize beautifully with industrial and farmhouse interiors. Hang it above a bar cart, anchor a gallery wall of vintage ephemera, or lean it casually on a shelf in a brasserie-style dining space to create a focal point that feels both authentic and quietly storied.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
