A beautiful late 19th-century French majolica jardinière, circa 1890–1900, this richly molded earthenware planter captures the sculptural vitality and painterly charm of Belle Époque ceramics. Elegantly formed with a deeply scalloped rim and matching lobed base, the vessel features twin acanthus-leaf handles that lend graceful movement to its silhouette. The body is decorated in relief with hunting scenes: on one side, a poised hunting dog moves through a wooded landscape; on the other, a hound retrieves game amidst foliage and water. The hand-applied glaze, in softly lustrous tones of aqua, sea green, rose, and warm ochre, displays pleasing depth and tonal variation, while the interior is finished in a traditional pale blue glaze. The piece remains in good overall condition, with age-appropriate wear and a visible restoration to the scalloped rim. Fine glaze crazing consistent with age is present.
Equally at home in a country house, hunting ranch, or refined urban interior, it brings a distinguished note of sporting charm to a mantel, console, or garden room. Beautiful as a cachepot for a leafy plant or seasonal arrangement, it is equally compelling displayed on its own, where its sculptural modeling and luminous glaze can be fully appreciated.
