A quietly expressive French polychrome carved wood figure of the Virgin and Child dating to the 18th century. Mary stands gracefully on a stepped base, draped in flowing cream robes beneath a deep blue mantle heightened with gilt, the Christ Child resting naturally on her left arm. The delicately modelled faces retain their original painted surface, while the gently animated poses lend the group warmth and expressive movement. Scattered paint losses reveal the gesso beneath, alongside gentle rubbing and wear consistent with age. A few old worm holes are present and inactive.
This devotional figure reflects the transition from the theatricality of the late Baroque to a softer classical restraint, expressed through the serene expressions and flowing drapery. Produced in a provincial French workshop for private devotion or a small chapel, it combines skilled carving and polychrome decoration with a warmth and intimacy often absent from more formal ecclesiastical sculpture. The softly worn surface and faded gilding give the piece a particularly gentle and authentic presence.
Ideal on a mantel, console, or bedroom chest of drawers, it lends a quiet devotional presence and gentle warmth to an interior. Paired with candlelight, giltwood, and natural linen, the softly worn polychromy brings depth and softness, while its poised silhouette sits beautifully within both historic and pared-back contemporary spaces.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
