French silver-plated wine cooler from the late 19th to early 20th century, oval and well-proportioned, featuring a scalloped rim with cutouts for resting glasses (up to 16), twin ring handles, and an engraved armorial with coronet and shooting star; such armorials were often added at the time of purchase, ranging from true family crests to personalized or pseudo-heraldic devices that evoked lineage and status. The softly burnished silver displays a warm, luminous glow to the exterior, while the interior remains bright and mirror-like, both surfaces catching the light beautifully; the piece is in very good condition, with light scratches, minor tarnish in the recesses, and a small bruise consistent with age.
It belongs to the French tradition of the rafraîchissoir, a vessel used from the 17th–18th centuries in formal table service to cool wine and glassware with ice, often featuring scalloped rims with notches to support glasses; by the 19th century such pieces were also frequently adapted as jardinieres, reflecting their decorative appeal. This lustrous piece lends a quiet sense of ceremony to the service of champagne or wine, imparting a subtle note of French refinement. Lined and filled with a fresh floral arrangement, it becomes an elegant centerpiece, equally at home on a console in an entryway or gracing a dining table.
