This distinctive cider pitcher from Normandy, affectionately known as a “Pot Cochon de Néhou” after the village in Normandy where this type of production originated, features a sculpted pig’s head with the spout cleverly formed as the snout. It combines playful design with practical use and has an iridescent, metallic-like enamel finish that catches the light beautifully. The piece bears the signature of Alphonse Hamel.
The Hamel family pottery tradition began with Pierre and Louis (active 1877–1941), with Alphonse carrying on the craft until 1977. Renowned for these zoomorphic pitchers, their workshop in Normandy produced pieces that were both functional household items and expressions of local character. The pig motif reflects the region’s strong agricultural heritage, making this a true historical conversation piece for any collection.
