A finely proportioned terracotta pitcher from southwest France, circa 1900, its emerald green glaze and simple form expressing the rustic grace of regional craftsmanship. It was skillfully wheel-thrown with a sturdy strap handle, a gently everted lip, and finely ring-turned bands accenting the long neck, waist, and body, all resting on a rounded base. The lustrous green lead glaze flows in rich, variegated tones over the exterior, into the interior, and across the base, creating a harmonious play of depth and texture. Its straight-sided cylindrical form evokes the measured precision of pewter jugs, blending utility with grace.
The piece remains in pleasing, timeworn condition, with rim chips, scattered glaze losses, and subtle firing irregularities that attest to its handmade origin and long history. The small chips reveal the warmth of the red clay beneath, creating a pleasing contrast with the deep green glaze.
Its saturated green brings a lively note to open shelving or a farmhouse dresser. Use it as a vase for cut branches or herbs, as a countertop utensil holder, or as a sculptural accent grouped with faïence and copper for a layered French country vignette.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
