This beautiful grand French giltwood mirror from the Napoleon III period (1852–1870) combines the softened rectangular form of the Louis-Philippe style with the more ornamental spirit of the Second Empire. The tall, rounded-shoulder frame is carved in wood and gesso, its surface subtly engraved with scrolling foliage and edged by a fine beaded inner molding. At the crest, two winged sea figures with undulating, scaled lower bodies flank an oval cartouche, their flowing forms entwined with stylized dolphins and acanthus scrolls. This exuberant maritime iconography, rooted in Baroque and Renaissance traditions, evokes themes of protection, abundance, and movement. Small volutes accent the lower corners and leafy blocks finish the feet, balancing the richness of the crest. Recently re-gilded, the surface is bright and even, while the old mirror plate remains clear with light, attractive speckling. A small break on the crest is visible from the back but remains very discreet from the front.
Its grand scale and luminous gilding make a strong focal point above a mantel, console, or chest. In an entry, it adds height and light, catching the eye with the playful crest while keeping a clean silhouette. Pair it with painted paneling and limestone for a classical setting, or let it bring warmth and shimmer to a contemporary room through contrast with simple lines and natural textures.
