In the 1970s, Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely conceived the monumental machine-sculpture Chaos No. 1 for Columbus, Indiana, installed in the City Mall. In direct relation to this landmark project, he produced a series of etchings and lithographs that explore the sculpture’s dynamic structure. This lively black etching on paper captures Tinguely’s unmistakable visual language, an energetic network of lines, gears, and trajectories that echoes the spirit of Chaos No. 1 and his kinetic machines. Pencil signed and numbered 2/100, it is presented under glass in a slim silver metal frame with an off-white mat. The impression is very good, with gentle age toning and minor speckling consistent with time.
A major figure of postwar modern art, Jean Tinguely (1925–1991) was a leading voice in kinetic art and New Realism, redefining sculpture through motion, humor, and mechanical poetry. To mark the centenary of his birth, a major exhibition was held at the Grand Palais in 2025, presented alongside the work of his wife, Niki de Saint Phalle, herself a pivotal figure of French modern art. Held in major museum collections worldwide, Tinguely’s works remain highly regarded for their historical importance and enduring appeal to collectors.
Visually striking yet intellectually playful, this work brings graphic tension and movement to an interior, pairing naturally with mid-century, industrial, or contemporary settings and rewarding close, thoughtful viewing.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
