This generously sized terracotta confit pot from the late 19th century hails from the South West of France, where it was a staple in traditional kitchens. The pot features a rich yellow glaze on the upper section, complemented by its natural, unglazed lower portion. Its unglazed base displays a weathered surface, adding to its rustic character. Two rounded handles complete the design, combining functionality with timeless simplicity.

Confit pots like this were used to store and preserve meats such as duck and goose in fat, an essential method of food preservation before refrigeration. The glazed upper half provided a protective seal, while the unglazed bottom allowed for cooling when stored in a cellar or partially buried.

This large confit pot offers both decorative and functional versatility. Use it as a striking statement piece in a kitchen, garden room, or living space, or repurpose it as a container for dried branches or other decorative accents. Its understated design and history of practical use make it a distinctive addition to any home.
