Of generous scale, this late 19th-century Castelnaudary cocotte is a lidded casserole in wheel-thrown terracotta finished with a lustrous emerald green glaze. The cylindrical body carries opposing lug handles as well as a twisted loop handle on the domed lid, and a hand-incised zig-zag band encircles the wall. The glaze is richly variegated with natural drips and pooling.
Castelnaudary, in the Languedoc, is celebrated for robust terre cuite vernissée devised for hearth and oven cookery, closely tied to the region’s emblematic cassoulet dish. This cocotte brings authentic French country character to a kitchen shelf, where its saturated green pairs beautifully with copper batterie de cuisine and white faïence. It makes a sculptural centerpiece on a farmhouse table, useful as a lidded catchall or for storing onions and garlic. Equally at home on a console or dresser, it introduces a warm, timeworn note to rustic, provincial, or contemporary interiors.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use, not some chips and losses as per photos.
